Thoughts from the chairman of the student organization:
”Enormous potential for Campus Roslagen”

Oscar Andersin has his own student apartment on Campus and is the chairman of the student organization at Campus Roslagen. Oscar is a full time student at the Stockholm School of Economics Center for Retailing, on his 2:nd year – and at the same time he is a 4:th year student at the Hanken School of Economics in Helsinki – also as a full time student. Is Oscar involved in a distance learning program? Definitely not. He is commuting between Norrtälje and Helsinki, via Arlanda International Airport, using a low budget airline.

We meet Oscar on Campus Roslagen, where he just has represented the students of Campus Roslagen in a meeting with leaders of the Municipality of Norrtälje, the board of The Swedish Trade Federation (Svensk Handel), the board of Hakon Invest, representatives from Stockholm School of Economics and the board of Campus Roslagen AB.

How on earth do you find the time to commute between two countries and attend two full time economics programs at the same time? – (Laughs) Well, it doesn’t leave me much spare time, that’s for sure. Two things that really help me is that I live close to my schools; in Helsinki at my parent’s place and here on Campus in my apartment only a few minutes walk from the various educational halls. The fact that I’m now attending my fourth year at Hanken is also an advantage. At the Stockholm School of Economics Center for Retailing here in Norrtälje the curriculum and schedule is strictly decided by the school, but at Hanken School of Economics the flexibility is that much greater – especially after the first few years. The flexibility in Finland makes it possible for me to choose easier courses there when I have difficult courses here in Norrtälje, and vice versa. In addition, I have many helpful classmates. They help me with notes from the lectures I miss. And I always make sure to get the Power Point-files from the professors lectures, so I know what to focus on before each exam.

What does you commute look like in practice? – I take the bus from Campus Roslagen to Arlanda. From there I fly to Helsinki non-stop with the low fare airline Norwegian, they charge only 800 SEK round trip. I don’t want to travel that often. Every time I go I try to spend at least one week at the school I’m visiting.

A few years ago you studied only in Helsinki. How did you find Campus Roslagen? Had you ever visited Norrtälje? – I had heard about Roslagen in songs that we sing at midsummer in Helsinki, but I had no idea what kind of town Norrtälje was. On the Internet I found the Stockholm School of Economics Center for Retailing – and then I realized that the school was located at Campus Roslagen.

What did you think about Norrtälje once you got here? – It was summer and so beautiful! Norrtälje is like the Finnish city of Borgå but smaller, an incredibly beautiful town. All the service you need can indeed be found here; many shops, several large chain stores, a sports centre, public swimming pool and all such things. In the summertime there are lots of things to do in and around Norrtälje, but in the wintertime the town is pretty boring for us students. Then it is extra important with activities arranged by the student organization here at Campus Roslagen.

How do you like to live on Campus Roslagen? – The student apartments have been noted as among the finest in Sweden. Personally I like it very much here. But many students at Campus Roslagen want more past time activities to choose from. And there is an enormous potential for offering that at Campus Roslagen; everything is here already: a newly renovated house for the student organization to have meeting and parties in, gym, sports hall, a special hall for track & fields, good student apartments, Moberg´s Night Club, places to eat, the forest, a nice lake, trails for cross-country skiing, and last but not least – a great campus area with walking distance to everything. What we need to really work at now is attracting more students and get more educators and schools to establish themselves here. Then student life on Campus Roslagen can become really, really good. The SL double-decker buses are also an asset, with frequent direct lines between Campus Roslagen and the Royal Institute of Technology (Tekniska Högskolan) in Stockholm City. They take one hour in each direction and is a cheap way to access all that the capital of Sweden has to offer.

As chairman of the student organization at Campus Roslagen, what focus do you feel is needed to make Campus Roslagen grow faster? – Campus Roslagen has every possibility to become the hub for a cluster within retail. I’m talking about a mix with both retail companies and various university programs. The goal ought to be to create an environment attractive enough to have leading retail corporations move their head offices to Campus Roslagen. The location certainly has the potential. Campus Roslagen already has the best university education in retail economics within the Nordic countries, Visma will soon move here and there is plenty of good land to build on. Other areas of business can also be a good addition in such a retail cluster, for example logistics. To establish education for retail store managers at Campus Roslagen would be an excellent idea. Other university programs could of course also add to the students well being. The University of Gävle will for instance start nursing education here as of January 2012. Those students are of course also very welcome to become members in the student organization here at Campus Roslagen and partake in all of our various activities. However, I think it is retail that will make Campus Roslagen become well known both in Sweden and internationally in the coming years.

What is the atmosphere like today in the student organization at Campus Roslagen? – It is truly a very warm and friendly atmosphere here. We have a great deal of fun together. Students that attend the same programmes at Campus Roslagen has always been tight, but now a good feeling of belonging is growing among the student organization members as well, regardless of what school they attend. We are not a large organization, but we have more members than ever and the trend is growing. That the student organization got their own newly renovated building this past spring has really been great – we have already had many parties, toga evening, dance nights, kick-off week and other activities there.

Can you tell us anything about the student organization´s plan for the coming year? – There will of course be more parties and pub evenings. Next to the bar at the student house we now also have a large screen TV. We are going to use it to attract visitors when there are live events, for example in the field of sports and music. The goal is that the student organization should arrange at least one bigger event each week.

What would you like to say to students that have just moved to Campus Roslagen or started to go to school here? – That they are very welcome to join our student organization. The membership fee is only 100 SEK per year. I can guarantee that each one of them will get great value for their money, concludes Oscar Andersin, chairman of the student organization at Campus Roslagen.
